(FOUR) CONEHEADS
I hate myself for this, but I have to. Over the years SNL put out some great movies. Along with that, there were some of questionable quality. It’s all subjective, but I have my favorites and my less than favorites. I could have went with “Roxbury”, but I loved it. I could have went with “Ladies Man”, but it was at least vulgar. “MacGruber” could be here, but it ended up being way funnier than I expected. This shockingly leaves me to put Coneheads in here. The classic sketch was GREAT. The Coneheads plus the atmosphere of the 70’s just worked. Putting them in the early grunge 90’s… not so much. It was just a weird movie and I never got into it despite obviously good performances. It just didn’t mesh for me. I’ll watch it again, I swear… but right now this just feels right.
(THREE) STUART SAVES HIS FAMILY
This movie wasn’t good enough, it wasn’t smart enough, and doggone it, people hated it. It’s crazy to think Harold Ramis directed this movie that stars would be Senator Al Franken. The movie revolved around Stuart Smalley, a self help guru. The movie is just a huge cluster of lame. You want to laugh because it looks and sounds funny, but it’s not. I guess comedy and ducks have nothing in common.
(TWO) IT’S PAT
My fondest memory of the “Pat” character involve the intro to the Ugly Kid Joe “Everything About You” video. Other than that, I think I might have missed the boat on this one. It’s a character where you can’t tell if it’s a guy or a girl. It’s funny for awhile, but a whole movie? Yikes. Banana in pocket joke? Check. Nuts in a literal term? Ha Ha. Check. I didn’t enjoy the character at all. It was all shtick. The movie had some cool people in it, including Sweeny, but the best part of the movie was the creepiness of Charles “Fu*king” Rocket.
(ONE) SUPERSTAR
Boy did SNL put out a lot of movies in the 90s. Some, like the ones on this list sucked and some rocked. Sadly, this one sucked too. I do like Molly Shannon. She has had some great characters on SNL and movies like “Year of the Dog” prove how awesome she can be. I have an autographed picture of her in my collection. Big big fan, but this movie sucked. The Mary Catherine Gallagher character was funny and you’d laugh every time it was SNL because she busted her ass to get the laugh. The movie was just too much. The stretched out plot took away from the character by a lot. Maybe with a different script or in a different direction, but I typically groan when I see this coming on.
