(FOUR) DUNKAROOS
I miss dunkaroos. Back in the 90’s, school lunches still consisted of something more than lettuce and mineral water. A loving mother packed that lunch with care and precision. One item my mom never got any complaints about was dunkaroos. It’s a portable container with some gram crackers and some frosting. Healthy? No. Awesome? For Realzies.
(THREE) BIG HATS
I miss big gaudy and colorful hats. There are a few varieties to this. I miss the big poofy top hats that might as well been put out by Cross Colors that groups like Salt-N-Pepper and Digital Underground wore. I also miss the big jester hats, the other rave-X-Games-Mountain Dew type of hats. Headwear is being neglected.
(TWO) GARBAGE CAN OF CANDY
This is a really random one, but for some reason I can’t shake this memory. Who else remembers that candy from the early 90s/late 80s? It was a little trash can that was full of sugary candy much like Smartees. The difference is that these little candies were in the same of random trash. I remember a fish bone one, a can, and maybe a boot. Did this really happen or am I going crazy?
(ONE) BET UNCUT
At like 2AM on weekdays, BET would abandon their normal programming and get dirty. They’d basically show all the low budget videos, the vulgar videos, and the videos that never ever saw the light of day any other time. I remember seeing Humpty Hump years after the Humpty Dance doing stuff. Tek from Real World singing. A great song called “White Girls”. I remember seeing Ric Jilla, “the Gary hip hop legend”, for the first time. They showed Nelly’s “Tip Drill” video on a loop. These videos were so graphic that they had to show warnings like every two minutes. I miss these videos. In many ways, I think the lower production quality of some of these videos may have actually inspired me, in part, to pursue filmmaking. I don’t even think I’m joking.
