(FOUR) THE BRAVERY
I’ve always dug The Bravey, but never went past the enjoyment of their singles. I really enjoyed “An Honest Mistake” and “Believe” and would always turn them up on the dial. Never an album though. I don’t know why, but it just never happened. Legally, illegally, or borrowed… I never sat down with one of their albums. I had no reason not to, but things just happen. I recently did listen to actual albums and regret not doing so earlier. I recommend YOU do the same.
(THREE) PEARL JAM
I’ll admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Pearl Jam, but I still respect their talents and iconic status. It’s hard not to enjoy them from time to time, but it’s never a band I got on board with. While grunge ended, bands broke up, and music and the world moved on Pearl Jam mearly moved on with it. They always maintained that rawness and pending chaos of grunge, but couldn’t call them that today. I’m pretty sure they prove that no matter what genre or label you’re given if you outlast it, you’re just accepted as a flat out rock and roll band in its purest form.
(TWO) R.E.M.
Same situation as Pearl Jam. In fact, everything I said about them could be said about R.E.M. Then again, they weren’t really grunge, but rather “college radio”. That still evolved over time and their timeless and icon status was pretty much secured. They have too many songs and too many imprints on pop culture history to be ignored. Some bands have longevity and acclaim for a reason. R.E.M. proves that.
(ONE) MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE
For a few years I could honestly say Mindless Self Indulgence was my SECOND favorite band of all time. I was all about them and their music was my ear candy. Their stage shows were crazy, the music inspired fun and exactly what my brain needed… at that time. The band evolved into a direction I wasn’t into so I slowly and surely took steps away from my “audio crush”. MSI is always going to be a band I’m a fan of and I’ll always welcome songs from pre-“Issues” era, but I have a more realistic fondness for them. Are they my second favorite band anymore? Not a chance.
