(FOUR) PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
I wasn’t that big of a fan of this series as a lot of people were. I do recognize it’s a very successful franchise and it’s hard to not see how bad ass Johnny Depp is in this movie. He created a great and iconic character that’ll be watched by children for a billion years from now. I just can’t get into the movies though for some reason. It’s still worth noting and Depp is awesome no matter how tedious these movies can be.
(THREE) FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS
Johnny Depp IS Hunter S. Thompson. In most movies Depp plays a pretty boy or someone who has some type of cool swagger. As Thompson, he’s just a weirdo. There is a very enduring wobble to Depp’s Thompson and he really makes that movie awesome. The writing is obviously magic, but Depp brings that shit to life.
(TWO) BLOW
When I first thought up the idea for this one I figured this would be my number one. It’s clearly my favorite Johnny Depp movie. The story, the acting, the direction, and the soundtrack to this movie have to be one of probably my top ten movies. I get tired of the Tim Burton shit and the kids movie film spree he seems to be doing but this movie just about single handedly gets him a pass for life.
(ONE) EDWARD SCISSORSHANDS
I had to have a gut check on this one, but I’m pretty secure in my pick here. Edward Scissorshands is a beautiful movie and I think is an unsung modern classic. The character of Edward is so unique and the story, the imagery, and the heart of this movie are cinematic beauty. Johnny Depp gets tons of love for the other movies in his career, but I think without Scissorhands he would not have nearly the amount of success he has had. Maybe he realizes this and keeps doing Tim Burton movies to return the favor? That actually makes sense. Hey! It’s a realization!
