(FOUR) EMBRACED STEREOTYPES
I hate stereotypes. The whole redneck-ish/white trash stereotype is put on NASCAR. I try to watch Sportscenter for SPORT scores, and get stuck watching coverage and interviews of this crap. Yeah, it’s a pretty damn “Southern” sport. It just makes me cringe. I’m embarrassed for them way more than I’m mocking them. Yee-Haw
(THREE) NOT A SPORT
Racing a car isn’t east, sure. It involves being a great driver and knowing what the hell you’re doing. Some are great at it and make it to the big times and others suck. It IS a skill. It’s just not a sport. It’s intense, but not nearly as physical as a “sport”. It’s a “race”, but not a “sport”. To me a sport is a athletic competition. Some sort of contact is needed outside of huge steel on wheel contraptions they’re calling cars in these things. It’s not as lame as poker being called a sport, but it’s still a pretty big stretch.
(TWO) PARTY SPORT
If NASCAR was a college it'd be one of those lame Florida ones. I’m not trying to be a party pooper but its pretty lame to call these sporting events. Let’s be realistic here, it’s a Fourth of July party. It’s a cook out, there is plenty of beer, people camp out, and basically the race is just in the background. What’s the fun in saying “There it is!” 300 or 500 times a race in between hot dogs, beer, and festivities. It’s the crowd you’d expect if Jimmy Buffett and Metallica were to perform together at Sturgis. It might be fun for some, but for me and wise thinking folk like me, it sounds horrible.
(ONE) THEY DRIVE IN A CIRCLE
Yeah, this is the biggest one. I know sports can be really repetitive, but driving in a circle for a few hundred laps? C’mon. I know there are a million excuses and “really intelligent” reasons why it’s so great… Whatever. At the end of the day it’s dudes driving as fast as they can in circles. Say whatever you want, this is one thing you can’t deny.
