(FOUR) AFI
They were dirty three cord thrash-punk. The early videos remind me of Smashing Pumpkin oldies, their middle videos remind me of Marilyn Manson videos, and their recent videos remind me of whatever else is popular right now. But the problem is that despite their obvious trend following evolution I can’t hate them. They are solid musicians and even if their image shifts to a particular style they make respectable music. I’ve never went out and bought an AFI album and I don’t plan on it, but if I had to pick a band from the recent emo-punk-whine-rock genre they’re my guys.
(THREE) THE ROOTS
The Roots are too good and too cool to be Jimmy Fallon’s house band. For years they’ve torn up the hip hop/funk rock scene. Hell, I think it’s safe to say they own the scene. Many would just toss them into the “house band” pool or dismiss them as rappers. What people are missing out on here is the fact they are one of the best musically inclined bands in all of music right now. Their albums are solid, the stage show is energy, and the band rocks. If you need to catch up on this one, start off with The Seed V.2. It’s pretty accessible and really damn catchy.
(TWO) JOHN MAYER
I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again. John Mayer IS metal. He might be a speed demon or head band like a Neanderthal, but the dude wails on the guitar. He is easily one of the best guitarists living today and would put a respectable dent in the “All Time” list. He’s more into a soulful folksy rock ala a Clapton or Petty. I think the fact that he’s not in a more conventionally accepted genre is what holds people back in acknowledging his skills. Don’t let his quirky demeanor fool you; John Mayer will impress you if you give him an open mind and a few minutes.
(ONE) MARIYLN MANSON
I understand this one. He has put on the freakshow image for years and it rubs people the wrong way. Most of his fans are the disenfranchised and “scene” people. He does cater to his people, but there is so much talent and depth under that eyeliner that it’s scary. The man is smart, well written, and knows exactly what he’s doing. Get past it all and listen to a song like Coma White, The Man That Your Fear, or his latest album in general. Ignoring his talents is like playing hard to get at a strip club. You probably shouldn’t, but you won’t have any regrets in the morning.
