"4 Best Lives After Prematurely Leaving SNL "

BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

(FOUR) ROB RIGGLE
He was only a featured player and there are some that others could say that went on to have bigger careers, but I’m going with this one. He was on for the 04-05 season and got in some funny impressions of Larry the Cable Guy, Howard Dean, Mark McGwire, and Toby Keith. He was pretty much a solid utility player for the time he was on. He stood out and I think a lot of viewers accepted that he was going to come back and be a mainstay. He wouldn’t return, but he’d end up on The Daily Show, tons of stand up shows, and in movies like Talledega Nights, Step Brothers, The Hangover,The Other Guys, and even some movies that don’t have Will Ferrell in them!

(THREE) SARAH SILVERMAN
She was with SNL in 93/94 as a writer and featured player. I really can’t think of any sketches she was in off the top of my head. She would be let go as she only got one sketch to dress rehearsal, but none at all on the air. If you are aware that comedy exists then you know Sarah Silverman is a funny person. She did stints on Mr. Show, Larry Sanders Show, and other shows. She had tons of one-offs on huge shows and has popped up in some solid movies. It’s pretty safe to say she’s one of the top stand ups alive right now and easily one of the best female comedians ever. She still hasn’t had the huge huge break out yet, but it’s bound to happen.

(TWO) JANEANE GAROFALO
Janeane only lasted on SNL for six months. She left mid season in 1995 because she hated it. She said the experience made her “anxious and depressed” and there was a whole sexist attitude she didn’t like. I do remember her though. She was typically the wife in a sketch or something like that. Obviously she went on to have a great career. She had spots on Mad About You, Seinfeld, Newsradio, and others. She rocked it on The West Wing and Larry Sanders in the TV front. She’d had some good movie roles on top of that and remains a huge stand up act. I like her, but her style is way too distinct for SNL. SNL seems to have more of an extroverted smile and jab approach while she’s much darker, articulate, and a tad morbid.

(ONE) LARRY DAVID
Larry David wrote for SNL in 84/85 and left mid season after only getting one sketch on. The sketch was aired very last that night. He rebounded. The Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld creator is a rich man. The syndication money from Seinfeld is enough to buy a few third world countries or one or two second world countries. I’m no mathematician though. I love this guy’s humor and rhetoric, but I can’t see him working in an SNL environment. By 89 Seinfeld was coming and he’s been keeping busy since and making TV history.
