BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER
(FOUR) THE EX
This movie is really underrated. Zach Braff and Amanda Peet are a young couple who encounter her old high school flame, a wheelchair bound Jason Bateman. I was always a fan of this guy, but I never saw him in role like this. He is just a likeable everyday guy. Then here he’s a really evil and manipulative asshole who just so happens to be in a wheel chair. Lots of laughs and by the end you’ll hate Bateman. If not, you’re a bad person.
(THREE) HANCOCK
Again, he’s a supporting star here. It’s all Will Smith and Charlize Theron. Bateman plays the role of a human. Smith and Theron have super powers and do all the cool things. I really liked Will Smith in this movie because of his attitude in certain scenes. I don’t think the super characters work at all without Bateman, the human. He kind of represents “us”, the viewer who has to experience this craziness going on.
(TWO) TEEN WOLF TOO
Yeah, Teen Wolf with Michael J. Fox is a classic, but I think too many people sleep on this one. I think this movie had cooler friends. That guy with the van in the first one felt a little too date-rapey for my liking. Generally, the character in both movies is “Stiles”, but the second one didn’t make me make sure my wallet was still there. Here his friends are cooler, it’s college!, and the assholes are meaner. I think a big part of my love was the fact that cable TV showed this movie on a loop back in the day. I had to have watched it a hundred times.
(ONE) THE SWITCH
I really don’t understand why this movie didn’t take off as much as it should have. It’s a great comedy. I blame the name change and the marketing. It was originally “The Baster” and the trailer sucked ass. The trailer and marketing make it seem like your everyday romantic comedy. It’s FAR from that. It’s one of the funnier and more charming movies I’ve seen in the past year or so. I’m not big on Jennifer Anniston’s movies, but I liked this one. I really hope this movie finds an audience to appreciate it somewhere down the line. The chemistry he has with that awesome little kid actor is great, Jeff Goldblum is in it, and it’s way better than it sounds. It’s a human nature movie with a crazy little twist that makes it flow. It’s not your normal rom com. This felt like a Woody Allen movie, which is fantastic is you ask me.
