(FOUR) HARLEM HEAT
The song was called “Rap Sheet”, but I didn’t know that until a few minutes ago. I was a huge fan of the old Harlem Heat theme song. It had a certain bounce to it that was always energetic. It was always a cool song to hit out of nowhere. Booker T and Stevie Ray would come out and kick ass on WCW Saturday Night and this song was played at the beginning and end of just about all their appearances. By that I mean, they won a lot. I was really happy when Booker T kept this song, or a version of it, for most of his illustrious singles run. I’m guilty of raising more than a few roofs to these song.
(THREE) DDP
Yeah, it was a remixed, midi file sounding rendition of Nirvana’s biggest hit… so what? “Teen Spirit” is one of the best rock songs of the modern era. The thing is that I’m pretty sure Nirvana never saw a cent from WCW on this. It’s like they changed it JUST enough to get by any copyright laws. I still liked the song a lot. I liked DDP a lot. The whole opening of Page shouting “SELF-HIGH-FIVE!” and then cutting into that iconic riff? Awesome.
(TWO) NWO
Any fan of wrestling from the late 90’s knows this one. I remember hearing a story about how this song was originally from a adult movie score. If you have that in mind you can hear it. This song just feels like something dirty or graphic. It has a groove, but it’s alarming. It’s another one of these songs that wouldn’t be acceptable in any other legit setting. The whole visual of Hall, Nash, Hogan, Pac, and company stammering and strutting out to this will be embedded in my head forever. Then if it ends with Scott Hall in the middle of the ring giving a “Hey yo!” then all the better.
(ONE) FOUR HORSEMEN
Youtube it, folks. This is the most bad ass wrestling theme song of all time. I’d want to argue that I’m talking about REAL wrestling theme songs, not shitty B-sides from second tier rock bands. It had a bad ass droning guitar riff that takes this potentially “porn sounding” theme song over the top. It’s one of those songs that you couldn’t put on a mix CD to play around your “normal” friends. They would mock you, but it’s their loss for not experiencing and knowing the bad assness and legacy that was behind the horsemen. They’re not even my favorite stable of all time, but if you’re a wrestling fan you HAVE to respect this one.
