(FOUR) HORRIBLE BOSSES
This is weird. I’ve had conversations talking about how his performance in this movie wasn’t all that amazing. It was funny and it did the job, but I really thought they were going for the same “ah-ha!” shock factor that Tom Cruise got in “Tropic Thunder”. It didn’t go that way at all, but that’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable. The dude has plenty more time to crank out some more over the top comedic roles. This was a pretty decent start. I appreciate the fact that he didn’t go too crazy and over the top with it and opted to blend into the story and tone of the movie. Charlie Day and Jennifer Aniston are why you want to watch this movie, but Farrell is a solid bonus.
(THREE) IN BRUGES
Dude won a Golden Globe on this one. It’s a solid hitman/crime comedy. Colin stars with Brendan Gleeson and their chemistry is really fun. I just had a hard time really getting into this movie. It felt like another “Snatch” type of “witty” dark comedy crime movie. It was much more than “just that”, but it still was hard to shake. I’ll give it another chance sometime down the line.
(TWO) CASSANDRA’S DREAM
They say Woody Allen’s recent movies are hot and cold. I’m a fan so I tend to find some level of enjoyment in all of them, even “Deconstructing Harry”. I think the critics and viewers missed the boat on this one. Pun totally intended for the three people in the world who might read this and understand it. This movie’s story and narrative is a deep morality struggle. It reminds me of “Crimes and Misdemeanors”, but without Alan Alda or the charm. That’s still impressive. I remember my first viewing and being blown away by how the story went. YOU should give it a chance sometime down the line.
(ONE) PHONE BOOTH
This was where the dude got his chance to run with the ball. He was in some smaller movies before this and I do know he was in Minority Report, but this was all him. This movie pretty damn underrated. I’m not a big action thriller fan. The main reason is that most of them aren’t rewatchable. Once you see them and know the plot twists it loses its appeal. I think because of that, movies like this don’t get their long due respect. Colin Farrell is solid here in his first lead role and does a great job carrying a movie that takes place almost entirely in a phone booth. In a phone booth!
