(FOUR) UNDER THE BRIDGE
I think this is the song that really made the band who they are. I remember seeing this video on MTV and hearing it on the radio all the time. It’s one of those “definitive songs of the 90s”. The video was trippy and I can still recall most of the imagery from it. The song was just so much unlike anything else out there (not named Faith No More, yeah I said it.)
(THREE) MY FRIENDS
This song is amazing. The acoustic ballad contains lyrics that are hard to not relate to. It’s a laid back and mellow tune where Anthony Kiedis lets his soul drip from his voice. One cool aspect about this is that Dave Navarro was in the band. His guitar work is pretty awesome. It’s a stripped down tune, but it’s full of so much raw emotion that you can’t walk away from it without it impacting your day in one way or another.
(TWO) GIVE IT AWAY
Is THIS the band’s biggest hit? Probably. It’s a great song. The Chili Peppers have put out literally dozens of “all time greatest” songs. Their music is going to be part of the world’s musical lexicon forever. It’s a rock song, it’s got rap, it’s funky, it’s punk, it’s glam, it’s everything good. There aren’t enough songs like this out there.
(ONE) SCAR TISSUE
This is my personal choice. I love the video. I love the laid back vibe. I love the guitar solo. I just love this song. It’s not really the most popular of their songs, but I dare anyone to tell me it’s not an awesome track. This band is more known for its funk rock styling’s, but here is a down tempo melodic track where the band drives in a convertible in a desert. On paper, it’s nothing too special but magic does get captured here.
