(FOUR) BORED TO DEATH
In mid October, HBO is going to sneak out the third season of Bored to Death. This show is hilarious. At first it’s almost like a stand off. You watch it, but you don’t know if you should enjoy it… then slowly it grows on you. You become part of this world and you don’t want to leave. The world here is Jason Schwartzman playing a writer who takes private investigator cases. He hangs out with his artist friend, Zach Galifianakis and his boss and magazine editor, Ted Danson. The cases are crazy, the cameos rock, and they smoke a lot of weed while talking about life. Smart stoner comedies are getting harder to find.
(THREE) COMMUNITY
This is the best comedy on network TV. I like 30 Rock, Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, The Office, and the other quality comedies currently out there on network TV, but Community is the best. The cast is great and the chemistry is clearly coming to form. I can miss shows and not be upset about it, but if I miss Community I feel like incomplete. Now that they added John Goodman(!!!), Michael K. Williams (OMAR LITTLE!), and Martin Starr it can only get better. If you had told me that I’d be excited about watching the dude from The Soup acting in the same show as Omar from The Wire and Chevy Chase from The Chevy Chase Show I’d prolly stlap you. “St-lapping” is my new hybrid word for stabbing and slapping. It’s THAT serious.
(TWO) FRINGE
There aren’t that many shows that I’ll watch on a weekly basis. This is one of them. The show was amazing for the first two seasons and then it sorta lost me. This last season was pretty lame. The whole fake-Olivia thing was pushing it. Then the cartoon episode. Then the episode where Anna Torv had to impersonate William Bell REALLY bothered me. I miss the days of a weekly case, Walter being wacky, and an overall story arch being firmly built and taken in a solid and fun direction. Now Peter is in the future or something? C’mon. I’m not excited about the show in the least bit, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious as hell as to where they’re going with this.
(ONE) DEXTER
I love this show, but I hope this is the last or at least second to last season. I just don’t want to wake up one day and think to myself “Remember when Dexter was awesome?” For five years it has consistently been one of the best shows on television. Michael C. Hall is the best actor on TV and this show is great. It’s just they keep recycling the same story over and over again. No matter how they slice it(pun intended) it always seems to be about Dexter meeting someone, getting close, he then shares his “dark passenger”, then he has to let them go. They bring in new bad guys every season and they’re starting to treat it like superhero movies. The whole “who’s the new bad guy THIS season” thing is cool, but this isn’t Batman. It’s Dexter. I want to see Dexter. This season we get Mos Def, Colin Hanks, and what looks to be some weird voodoo/religious styled storyline. I’m interested, but I’m still nervous….
