(FOUR) KINDA OLD
Seriously. I kind of thought the dude was in his 20’s, but Demetri Martin is 38! He’s cool and all, but I really didn’t think he was THAT old. It’s just he didn’t start doing stand up until he was in his late 20’s. He graduated from Yale in 1995 and went to law school. He was married, in law school, and was on a whole different track, but when he was about 25 he took things a different direction.
(THREE) TV
He had his own show on Comedy Central called “Important Things With Demetri Martin”. It was a variety comedy show. It was like the white hipster version of The Chapelle Show. He’d talk to people and set things up in a studio and then cut to randomly shot skits and sketches. It was cancelled though, so that sucks. He also had a deal with CBS to make a pilot and a new show. He wrote, produced, and stared in it but they decided not to air it. Recently, he hooked up with Fox on a new animated series because Fox doesn’t have nearly enough animated series. They MIGHT air it.
(TWO) ACTOR
Demetri Martin has done some acting. He was on Flight of the Conchords playing a performer named “Demetri”. Yeah, that’s right. He has been in other stuff too. He was really good in Taking Woodstock though. That movie was really underrated and his performance was really solid and something fresh. I don’t get how that didn’t open him up to like a million more roles. He has a supporting role in Take Me Home Tonight and the recent Contagion and it seems like there’s more coming up. That’s cool.
(ONE) SMARTY PANTS
He’s not your normal comedian. He doesn’t go up and tell long stories or typical jokes. He has a big grasp on word play. He has a crazy wit and he twists things around in a really fun way. He also does stuff with drawing. He’ll pull out a big pad and draw on it, he’ll play random instruments and sing songs, and he’ll pretty much do anything. He’s a comedian by trade, but in reality he’s out there doing one-man shows every time he’s up.
