(FOUR) MONSTER
In most reviews you’ll read that this is Charlize Theron’s best acting performance. It’s hard to argue with that. She won a butt ton of awards and rightfully so. Her performance as a serial killer was great. Too many people sleep on Christina Ricci’s performance as her lesbian lover. She had innocence to her, but she played it with this uncomfortable rage lurking on the surface. It’s a much understated role.
(THREE) SLEEPY HOLLOW
I’m not a big Tim Burton fan anymore. How cliché is that? It’s like complaining about MTV not playing music videos. Some beasts cannot be contained no matter how much we cling on to our preferred memories of something. This was one of the last Burton movies I really enjoyed. Johnny Depp stars, but Christina Ricci is dashing as the love interest.
(TWO) PROZAC NATION
This was a pretty underrated movie as it is. It’s based on the autobiography of a woman sharing her experiences with depression. She’s in Harvard and has some success but goes overboard with sex and drugs. Things get worse before they get better. The narrative is a little “Lifetime” and the end gives false hope to people, but that aside Ricci’s performance is really good here. I was surprised she didn’t get more roles like this.
(ONE) THE ADDAMS FAMILY
A dark comedy for kids! If you were around in the early 90’s then you’ve seen this movie and you love this movie. The late great Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and everyone else were at their A-game. Being a kid at the time I was in love with this movie. Also, I related to Pugsley and Wednesday Addams. Wednesday was played very morbidly by a really young Christina Ricci. I pick this because it’s really what made a lot of us notice her. That and I was really fond of this movie. I wore my VHS out for sure.
