(FOUR) BIG OLE BUTT
This is a really fun song. It has the raunch of a “Baby Got Back”, “Thong Song”, or “Tip Drill” but has a sense of class. It has a narrative and tells a story about big ole butts. I think before I really connected in my head to LL Cool J, I knew this song. I can remember being really young and singing out loud to “Brenda got a big ol’ butt!”. Fun track. I’m surprised no one has tried to cover it yet.
(THREE) ROCK THE BELLS
This song is pure old school Def Jam grit. It’s muddy. It’s scratchy. It’s mixed weird. It’s still one of the biggest hip hop songs ever. It came out in 86 and really put a new face on hip hop. This song really doesn’t get as much love as it should.
(TWO) GOING BACK TO CALI
To me, this was when LL really got into his bad ass mode. The music to this song is great and impactful. It cuts into almost a rant of Cool J-ness. It builds up. It builds up. It builds up. We’re going BACK to Cali. Something. Something. Something. I don’t think so!
(ONE) MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT
“Don’t Call It A Comeback!”…Was there any doubt about this one? Mama Said Knock You Out IS his song. Everyone knows this song and knows a few lines from it. Pretty much every big artist has one big song that everyone knows despite them having a huge catalogue of huge hits. It’s just this song rocks. The black and white video.
