(FOUR) SNL WRITER
JB Smoove wrote for a lot of episode of SNL. He even won a 2007 WFA award for best writing for a Comedy/Variety Series. There is one spot where he shows up as JJ in a Good Times parody, but I think they really missed the boat with not putting him in front of the camera. I can’t help but imagining how awesome he would have been in the Weekend Update role.
(THREE) MOVIE STAR
He’s surely more noticeable from his work on TV, but JB Smoove had appeared in some really awesome movies. He had spots in Hall Pass, Date Night, Mr. Deeds, With or Without You, and the iconic film achievement that was Pootie Tang. I’m not saying give him a 100 million dollar budget, but I’d really be interested to see him step into a main role. He CAN pull it off and it WOULD be funny. Why not?
(TWO) LEON AND THE TV
Leon has quickly become one of the best supporting cast members on Curb Your Enthusiasm. He showed up as part of the “Black Family” in 2007 and has been tearing it up since. I still don’t get why Larry just casually lets him live with him, hang out, and mooch but I think we all just have to accept it. He sometimes provides Larry with balls, sometimes he gets him into trouble, but all the time he provides serious laughs. The episode from the 2011 season where he proved that by wearing glasses black people are treated different is amazing and overall one of the best episodes. In part because of how great JB Smoove is with the “Leon” character.
(ONE) SMOOVE DANCER?!?!
On his wikipedia page it says he shorted his name of Jerry Brooks to “JB” and added “Smoove” when he became a standup comic. On his imdb it says he changed it when he was a hip hip dancer. That’s awesome. There is something really enjoyable about thinking of the JB Smoove we all know now dancing in old 80’s/90’s hip hop break dancer style. It might not even be true, but I’m going to just allow myself this one little naivety.
