(FOUR) BORED TO DEATH
Sadly, I just read that HBO canceled it. That’s bullshit, but I suppose not too surprising. The first two seasons of this show were really great and sadly really under the radar. The third season felt like more of both. It was a better season and somehow less people I spoke to watched it. It’s a shame too. A witty stoner crime show? Yes, please. Jason Schwartzman is at his best here. Ted Danson has NEVER been this funny. Zach Galifianakis is perfect as Ray and Super Ray. I’m bummed out. I don’t know what to say. I really liked this show. Now how about a made for TV movie or DVD or web presentation to sum it up. Hell, if Columbo could keep coming back for random specials then why the hell not Jonathan Ames? Thanks for the three seasons either way.
(THREE) SUBURGATORY
I’ve dug a few other new shows like Broke Girls, Man Up (RIP?), and New Girl, but I really like this new show. I love the tone of the show. There really aren’t any sitcoms on ABC that gets this vibe going. I think it’s all thanks to the writing and the casting. They put together a great cast of actors. Jeremy Sisto and Jane Levy star as father and daughter. He’s been in a lot of stuff and is a really good actor. Why he’s not an A-list actor is a mystery to me. Jane Levy is impressive. I’ve never seen her before, but she’s going to do some awesome stuff. Then we get Carly Chaikin, Rex Lee, Alan Tudyk, Cheryl Hines, Ana Gasteyer, Chris Parnell, Allie Grant, and now I hear Alicia Silverstone. I hope this show finds its audience and gets some room to spread out a little.
(TWO) WORKAHOLICS
Out of nowhere, it felt like I was watching this show and anticipating the next one. By simple luck, I got to watch it. This show is just really enjoyable and fun to watch. The chemistry of the dudes is awesome and it comes from the same “DIY slacker comedy” cloth as “It’s Always Sunny”. It’s less “asshole East Coast” and more “laid back stoner West Coast”. I love both and happy both exist. Blake, Adam, and Anders are awesome. The random situations and antics they get involved with are hilarious and shockingly relatable. A third season will happen and hopefully many more.
(ONE) CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
This was by far the funniest show of the year. Curb is going to go down as one of the funniest shows of all time and this latest season is a key example of why. The entire season was hilarious, but “Car Periscope”, “Larry vs. Michael J. Fox”, and especially the “Mister Softee” episode stood out. Putting Larry David and the gang in New York was almost overdue, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Watch the “Mister Softee” episode!
