(FOUR) GAME OF THRONES
I have never seen Lord of the Rings and I don’t care to. I just don’t care for old timey wizard stuff. Dragons are stupid. There I said it. I did NOT expect to like Game of Thrones at all, but I’m a HBO loyalist and heard some good things. I started watching and I was very soon very much into it. The story was crazy and left my jaw ajar and anticipation pinned to the next episode. The characters were well written and well performed. The show has tons of balls and is so much more than the typical Robin Hood/medieval-style show.
(THREE) BOARDWALK EMPIRE
The first season was very good, but not the great show we all were expecting. I think this season really set the standard for the show. It showed how spaced out the characters were and how much scope and depth it has. Steve Buscemi’s work on this show is so good that it comes off effortlessly. His work this past season was great, but the ending makes him a completely different man. Michael Pitt should get an award for his work on this season. I’ve never been so sympathetic, disgusted, and fearful of a character before. They ended season two with a bang. A “bang” that changes the face of the show going forward.
(TWO) DEXTER
I’ve said in the past that Dexter should have ended with five seasons. It did start to get stale and a little repetitive, but this last season blew my mind. The ending was finally a cliff hanger. That’s something that should have been done before now. It seems like every season ended with the story being wrapped up with a nice little bow on top and then we’d wait to see who the next bad guy was and who the next friend of Dexter to die was. I don’t want to talk about it because I feel like it’ll ruin the magic. Easily the second biggest “holy shit” moment behind Rita’s bathtub death.
(ONE) BREAKING BAD
There was no better show on television in 2011 then Breaking Bad. The grit, the draining pull, and the goosebumb-intense action that always feels pent up in all the delightfully wrong and surprising areas. The show never takes the easy way out. The characters of Walter and Jesse have grown into their own worst enemies and it keeps getting worse. We don’t want either to die, but at this point it’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion. This show has pushed the envelope past and lines of expectations. All we can do now is shut up, watch, and then comprehend.
