BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER
(FOUR) JOURNALIST
You wouldn’t expect this, but Lampanelli has a wall full of diplomas. She studied journalism at Boston College and Syracuse University and then grad school at Harvard. She was a copy editor at Popular Mechanics and was an assistant at Rolling Stone. She was also a fact checker for Spy magazine.
(THREE) STAND UP
Lampanelli started doing stand up in the early 90’s. She paid her dues doing open mics and small shitty places. She would continue to do it and evolve with it. She got big in the early 00’s and started touring like crazy. She’s had tons of specials and talk show appearances. She’s one of the biggest stand ups out there, but I still feel like she’s not fully broken through on a mainstream level. I think it’ll happen before too long.
(TWO) CHARITY
Lampanelli is a big supporter of sexuality rights of all variety. The Westboro Baptist Church protested one of her shows in May of 2011. She announced before hand that for every protestor that showed up and spewed their hate she should donate a grand to Gay Men’s Health Crisis. 44 protestors showed up, but Lisa was generously bad with math and donated $50,000 to the charity.
(ONE) TABOO
If you’ve listened to Lisa Lampanelli on stage for more than five minutes than you know she’s not afraid to say anything. There doesn’t seem to be a line she won’t cross. She’ll talk about race, sexuality, and just about anything that most people too anally PC about. Her delivery is a playful assertiveness so a lot of people don’t get that she’s not being hateful. That’s their problem.
