(FOUR) THE BEACH BOYS
The Beach Boys are one of the greatest bands of all time. I think most of us forget that. The Beach Boys had the surf-rock-pop stuff that EVERYONE knows the words to and then there is some really good folky rock stuff. I think a lot of “indie” bands don’t realize that their “sound” comes back THAT far.
(THREE) IRON MAIDEN
I know it’s easy to just assume Iron Maiden is Neanderthal music, but there is so much art and skill to them that it’s insane. I wouldn’t have thought so either. Then I saw them live a few years back at an Ozzfest. It was one of the best rock concert performances I’ve ever seen. Bruce’s vocals are almost operatic and the music has way more melody than any of the contemporary metal out there.
(TWO) THE DARKNESS
They got a lot of attention with “I Believe In a Thing Called Love”. It was their biggest hit for sure. Sadly, as awesome as the song is, I think it’s the only real exposure they’ve had. That same album is pretty rocktastic. It’s like Queen meets AC/DC in a way that’s just slightly unnerving. In a good way.
(ONE) THE KILLERS
The Killers are a band that people seem to really sleep on. They’ve had some really big hits and albums over the past ten or so years. I never really think about them, but when I do encounter them in ANY capacity other than the overplayed “Mr. Brightside” then I’m impressed. Their last album was one of the better albums of the past five or so years. In fact, this is a band that I need to get back on track with ASAP. I suggest you do the same.
