(FOUR) BORN TO THE BIZ
Carol was born in San Antonio, Texas. Her mom was a publicity writer for movie studios and her dad was a movie theater. So obviously she was around the world of entertainment from the start. Even after family problems, she would still live in Hollywood with her grandmother. She would do well in school and started UCLA majoring in journalism, but would be into theater before her second year. From there her entertainment dreams were set.
(THREE) PAID DUES
She went to New York to go after he dreams. She ended up working shitty jobs as her acting career was off to a rough start. She lived in a boarding house for women who were chasing the acting dream. She landed a few small roles, but she wouldn’t get her own show until 1967.
(TWO) CAROL IN COURT!
Don’t slander Ms. Burnett, folks. She won’t like it. She successfully sued National Enquirer and was awarded $800,000. This was 1981. Yes, 1981. That’s a lot of money for NOW, but in 1981 that was enough to end the cold war. My numbers could be off on that though. She also attempted to sue the makers of Family Guy over a depiction of a character that was obviously her. They got out of it by claiming parody, but parody has to be funny. Nothing is funny about that show. Carol Burnett should have won that one too.
(ONE) THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW
The show started in 1967 and would last over a decade. Most comedy die hards consider it a iconic show. It was a variety show and really blazed the trail for a lot of comedy we enjoy today. It wasn’t unnoticed or anything. It was 23 Emmy Awards and was at least nominated for MULTIPLE awards every season it was on. This show was and still is huge. The impact cannot be denied.
