(FOUR) DEEP HOUSE DISH
This sketch generally stars Kenan Thompson, but Samberg plays “T-Shane”. It’s a play on the techno-club kids and generic music style. As “T-Shane”, he’s a spikey hair nerd who makes horrible punny jokes and is always shot down by Kenan’s host character. He’s sort of the “Garth” of Kenan’s “Wayne” in this. It’s a smaller spot, but it stands out in a very cool supporting role. I always wanted more of the two main characters and less of the lame singer parodies they kept trying. The funny was the duo, not them.
(THREE) THE BLIZZARD MAN
Blizzard Man is the shit. He’s an early-90’s white guy rap parody. That’s a nice way of saying he looks like Vanilla Ice. The whole character is that he’s being extra “white” while trying to scat-rap. This is normally when a rapper is on the show. They start rapping in a studio and need help. In comes The Blizzard Man who shows up and drops a verse. It’s always a shock-laugh and it’s always welcomed. This character could have had a lot more miles if it were pushed more.
(TWO) MARK WAHLBERG TALKS TO ANIMALS
I remember when this first debuted. It came out of nowhere and it was hilarious. These two sketches have ruined the actor for me. I can’t hear him speak in a movie now without thinking about Samberg’s impression and the whole “Say Hello To Your Mother For Me!” line. Samberg killed the impression. It wasn’t just a “let’s sound like THIS guy”, it was a very solid and parody of the producer of Entourage. It got to Wahlberg too. He showed up and killed it real quick. This is one of those prime examples of something being funny because it’s true.
(ONE) THE DIGITAL SHORT
If I broke it down to “Andy Samberg’s Best Digital Short” spots this would be completely different. Andy stars in the majority of the most famous “Digital Shorts”. Going back to “Lazy Sunday”, to the “Natalie Portman Rap”, “Mother Lover”, “Jizz In My Pants”, “On a Boat”, and so on and so on. Samberg and his Lonely Island buddies revolutionized SNL’s short subject videos. They were always around, but these videos were the first big “viral video” explosion of SNL. It made SNL “cool” again and “must see”. Samberg is going to be part of SNL history forever because of this. His legacy is cemented and now he’s moving on. Thanks for the years laughs! Now make a Hotrod 2!
