(FOUR) IRON EAGLE
I want to make this clear. I have never seen Iron Eagle. I don’t want to see it. I’ve read a little about the description and I treated myself to watching the trailer a few times. This said, I LOVE me some Iron Eagle. It’s been one of my go-to 80’s references for well over ten years. The general idea of this on-going joke was actually a catalyst in my attempts at screenwriting. I will never see this movie and I’m okay with that. I still value it and hope everyone else goes and buys the DVDs and Blu-ray’s.
(THREE) THE OUTSIDERS
This was one of those “read the book and THEN watch the movie” deals in school that was pretty easy to appreciate. This movie had a LOADED cast. There wasn’t so much “action” as there was getting a look at the lives of these characters. I let it slide because of that big ass gang rumble. There was plenty of “action” in that scene. Poor Ponyboy….
(TWO) TOY SOLDIERS
I had a good discussion about this underrated gem the other day. This was another movie that made me somewhat frightened of going to school as a kid. This movie stars a lot of cool and notable people that I won’t go into. The plot is intense and would NEVER fly in today’s society and movie market. Terrorists take over an all-male boarding school and hold them hostage. The terrorists are evil in this and don’t hesitate to beat and kill the kids and faculty. The tension is crazy. The cool antics and way the group of rag-tag students deal with everything is really cool. I remember a lot of little things about this movie and I’ve not seen it in at least ten years. That’s a lasting impact. I’d like to see this again.
(ONE) CLASS OF 1999
I used to love the hell out of this movie as a kid. I’d wait up late at night to watch it on cable and I may have even taped it on a blank VHS tape at one point. I was never into too many action movies or science fiction movies as a kid. This was, as they’d call now, a “cyber punk” movie. It’s set in “the future” where things have gotten REALLY bad. People are shooting at each other, gangs are rampant, and the kids are all junkies. To remedy this, the school gets “android” teachers to keep things in line. The evil teachers go too far and the kids have to band together and take their school back. It’s a really crazy and violent movie that everyone should go out of their way to seek out. It made me a little worried that I’d be entering high school in the late 90’s. Luckily, things weren’t THAT bad. There were a few teachers I suspect were androids though…
