(FOUR) GIMMICK MATCHES
I should be specific. I love it when a gimmick match has a purpose. When a long term feud gets so heated they have no choice but to put the two fighters in a special match to inflict more pain. The classics are street fights, cage matches, falls count anywhere, 2 out of 3, or even a strap match. As time evolved, so did the creativity. Then there is the flipside of a gimmick match just being added for fun. A three way match is technically a “gimmick”. Those can be fun, especially the tag ones. Basically, anything that’s not a standard good ol’ fashion “one on one”. Just keep it simple and space them out. Otherwise it’s overkill.
(THREE) INVASIONS
There is not much cooler than a good invasion storyline. The biggest one was when nWo started showing up in WCW. The unexpected situation where you suspend belief and think “this isn’t supposed to happen!” Other situations that were huge include the Nexus debut, when WCW and ECW “Invaded”, when Al Snow showed up on RAW, Joey Ryan on TNA, and all of the little ones in between. These situations are always memorable.
(TWO) SHOTS WITH A RING BELL
Simple and to the point. When a wrestler goes outside the ring, takes the ring bell, and then institutes it into the match is always bad ass. It doesn’t happen nearly enough. The big blow to the head is a big deal, the tease option, and even ringing it in someone’s ear. It’s always a cool little delight to see it happen.
(ONE) THE NONSENSE THAT GETS “OVER”
Being a wrestling fan and truly “getting it” is like being part of a huge inside joke that only wrestling fans get. We know shit is silly and stupid, but we still embrace it. Maybe we’re slow, we’re being ironic, or maybe we just appreciate the campy and cheesy side of it but we just accept it. The Undertaker is dead and can throw lightening? Zack Ryder is a fan favorite? Anything Hulk Hogan ever did and wore? “Macho Man” Randy Savage? “The Rock”? I love it all, but holy shit… its nonsense.
