(FOUR) DOUG LOVES MOVIES
I could have gone to plenty of podcasts to take this forth spot. I’m a huge fan of WTF with Marx Maron, Ari Shaffir’s Skeptic Tank, The Steven Brody Stevens Festival of Friendship, and This Feels Terrible to name only a few. There was tons of cool shows in 2012. For this list I have to focus purely on my own subjective preference and consistency. Doug Benson’s “Doug Loves Movies” is as consistent as they come. He gets a great list of “who’s who” in stand up and some other awesome music and actor guests. From week to week his guests could range from Jon Hamm to Sarah Silverman to Jeff Garlin to Paul F. Tompkins. He gets tons of awesome people and they just bullshit about movies and randomness. They hang out, get in their plugs, and then play a game or two of fun. Doug let’s things go crazy, but I think that’s what’s cool about it. He’s not trying to be a babysitter or get deep hearted in an interview. The randomness every week is fun. Captain American was drunk and told Leonard Martin to “Name it! Bitch!” Find THAT on any other podcast.
(THREE) YOU MADE IT WEIRD WITH PETE HOLMES
Pete Holmes is just a likeable guy. His standup comedy is good, but I really look forward to his podcast. Over the year his show has been my favorite to get into. He gets cool and interesting guests and you’re kind of taken on the ride that is Pete’s life. As he interviews and talks to these interesting people we’re also learning more and sharing more with Pete. He has certain bits that are silly and worn out, but if you’re a long time listener you get in on the joke. A lot of podcasts feel a bit chatty and full of banter. More times than not, Pete will break that artificial barrier and get people to open up about things.
(TWO) THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE
I got into Joe Rogan’s podcast via other podcasts. Doug Benson would pop up in podcasts with Rogan on Deathsquad’s “Ice House Chronicles”. Then Duncan Trussell had Joe Rogan on his show. I was always under the impression that Rogan was a big grunt of a jock. I’m not into the UFC stuff, never liked Fear Factor, and I’ve just never had a reason to pay attention to him. I unfairly judged him. Besides his credits all I knew of him was the anti-Carlos Menstealia stuff. The more I heard him talk, bullshit, and share the more I was on board. I can’t miss a podcast now and have gotten so much from listening to this guy talk about life and interact with the really interesting and fun guests he gets on his show.
(ONE) THE DUNCAN TRUSSELL FAMILY SHOW
I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts, but I’ve not gotten into any nearly as much as Duncan Trussell’s amazing rambles. He gets tons of great people on the show. He’s a standup comedian so he gets a fair amount of people from that area, but he gets writers, actors, and really smart people. This show is really therapeutic. Duncan can get weird at times with the talks of singularity, but it’s at least presented in an entertaining way and gets in your head. The topics he covers is as real as it gets. He touches on depression, spirituality, religious, life, comedy, and pretty much all aspects of human nature. His lit-up positive outlook and ever-evolving wander make each podcast a journey that he shares with the listener. He needs his own TV show, but only if he can keep doing this show.
