(FOUR) MISS DROP KICKS HURT/CONNECTED DROP KICKS DON’T!
This never made sense to me. The drop kick is an awesome move, but the way it’s executed has always sparked a question in my head. When someone like a Rey Mysterio drop kicks someone and it connects the opponent will fall and sell it. Rey gets up and is fine. Yet if the opponent would move out of the way and Rey hits nothing he falls and sells it in pain. I’m sure there is something about momentum or landing, but it’s still a little silly. The fact that we all just accept this without ever having a valid explanation is pretty awesome.
(THREE) MYSTERY OPPONENTS & PARTNER
There is not much cooler than a well-built “mystery opponent” or “mystery partner” scenario. You don’t know who is coming out of the curtain and if it’s a cool surprise then it makes for a magical moment. The most recent case of this was Heath Slater’s run against legends leading into the 1000th episode in the summer of 2012. This goes back forever though. The surprise factor is awesome.
(TWO) MID-ACTION SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Wrestling is “staged”. The word “fake” is taken as an insult to a lot of people in the business, but it is what it is. How can you not say this when in the middle of a heated match a wrestler will stop his attack to go over to a table, take off two monitors and THEN use the table? If someone hates someone that much and wants to beat them up would throwing them into a monitor be that unrealistic? The whole procedure is just accepted by fans now. Same with making sure the chairshots!
(ONE) ICONIC ENTRANCE WAYS
Be it the small and simple entrances of the old MSG Wrestlemanias or the crazy huge elaborate ones from the recent years. The entrance way is a big part of the production evolution of wrestling. Still, the big crazy ones aren’t always the ones we’ll remember the most. The simple brick wall entrance ECW would use for years has been duplicated in a million independent wrestling shows and is still out there in full force. WCW had the cool tunnels that TNA would eventually rip off. I’ve seen crazy tall staircases in some cases. These things stand out and do matter. You know you’re really into wrestling when it’s a big deal when RAW changes the set. I wonder how many people actually do appreciate this.
