(FOUR) THE HEAT
On the surface you want to run and hide from this movie. I generally dig Sandra Bullock a lot. She’s likeable, attractive, and has been in some good things. At the same time she has been in a lot of stuff a 20-something dude wouldn’t want to see in the least bit. When she pops up in things I’ve gotten to the point that I automatically think it’s going to suck. I’m happy to say that I’m optimistic about this one. Bullock stars with the always hilarious Melissa McCarthy in this buddy cop movie. It does seem a bit formulaic and has that whole “we’re so different!” thing that partners always have in cop movies like this. That doesn’t mean it’s going to suck or anything, but it puts up a warning sign. Then that goes away when you find out that Paul Feig is directing it, the dude who did “Bridesmaids”. The supporting cast is rounded out by Marlon Wayans and Michael Rapaport so that’s a plus too. I dunno. I want to see this movie, but I’m going to try to keep my expectations reserved. That might end up to my benefit. Regardless, I’m optimistic this will be in the least good mild fun. If it’s more than that, I win!
(THREE) THE INTERNSHIP
Vince Vaughn is pretty damn cool. He has been in some of the coolest and most memorable comedies in the past decade or two. He’s constantly funny, entertaining, and the best part of whatever he’s in. Not every movie he puts out is “Swingers” or “Old School”, but even the more family side of things or the “cleaner” side of his spectrum is solid. Just because I don’t dig a movie doesn’t mean I don’t want to see Vaughn do his thing and make the best of it. He surprises you that way. With this movie, he not only stars in it but wrote it. It’s him and Owen Wilson as two sales men who have to reinvent themselves in the modern market and do so by becoming interns. The rest of the cast is sprinkled generously with names like John Goodman, Eric Andre, and Will Ferrell so I’m comfortable in thinking this movie will in the very least be “very funny” with the upswing being huge. There are some huge comedies coming out in 2013 and this one may be the sleeper come late spring.
(TWO) THE HANGOVER PART III
The first Hangover movie was a great movie. Possibly one of the funniest of the past ten or so years. If you enjoy comedy movies then you’ve seen it more than once and you appreciate it’s madness. The second one was solid too, but I totally get people’s argument that they just did the same things over again just in a different location. There was a lot of “we already saw that, but it’s still funny” moments. The problem is that we all loved the first one so much that we did watch it a few times. When you see it again and again and again you think you want the same thing, but you’re just numbing yourself to it. I’m not saying it was sterile or uninspired, but it just lacked that magic of the first. That said, I’m still in for more. I’m excited as hell to see what the “The Wolfpack” is up to this time around. From the information released and the little we’ve seen I’m pretty confident that this one will really mix it up and take us on a fucked up ride. We know there’s no wedding, bachelor party, or any of the same devices from before. They’re going a different route and you can’t help but get excited about the mystery. The cast is already sharp as hell, but the addition of John Goodman and the return of Heather Graham just puts it over the edge of coolness. Todd Phillips is a smart guy and I’m sure he and the guys have a lot of passion invested. I’m confident they’ll go out on a strong note.
(ONE) THIS IS THE END
This looks awesome. It’s the “Apatow crew” and most of the stars of “Knocked Up”, “Superbad”, and “Pineapple Express”. These dudes have awesome chemistry and pretty much can guarantee a good time. The plot revolves around six friends who get trapped in a house after the world starts falling apart outside. The world is “ending” and they’re stuck with low supplies, cabin fever, and tons of random funny antics. How can we now want to see a movie with Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, and Micheal Cera? That line up is sick. You can be sure there are some cool cameos and surprises on top of that too. The weird thing is that it seems they are all playing themselves. That is kind of surreal and weird. What I’ve seen and what I’ve heard about this movie is really promising. I’m excited to see a lot of movies in 2013, but after realizing the talent and premise involved with this I can’t wait.
