(FOUR) THE HOURS
I quickly learn that Nicole Kidman’s filmography isn’t as stacked as I had thought. For some reason I assumed she’d have more movies listed that I’d look back at and go “oh yeah! That was good!”. Sadly, not so much. Putting together a “Top 4” was hard. The Hours was decent. It had an all-star cast that included Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Ed Harris, and others. Kidman won the Oscar for this movie and rightfully so. Obviously, it was just a really solid outing.
(THREE) MOULIN ROUGE!
This was a popular movie, right? Kidman was nominated for the Best Actress award again, but this time she didn’t win it. It’s a musical so the little bit I’ve seen of it was enough. It’s just not my thing. That doesn’t change the idea that it was a beautifully made movie and Kidman stood out.
(TWO) BATMAN FOREVER
This is probably the movie of Nicole Kidman’s that I’ve watched the most. She plays the love interest of Batman in this movie. It’s 1995 Tim Burton Batman and luckily it’s Val Kilmer and not George Clooney’s. This movie seems to be unfairly criticized. Tommy Lee Jone’s Two-Face and Jim Carrey’s Riddler rocked. It just didn’t gel well for some reason. Oddly enough, when thinking of the “best Nicole Kidman movies” this came up first. I assumed it wouldn’t make the list, but here it is at #2.
(ONE) EYES WIDE SHUT
This movie is all sorts of screwed up, but at the same time its all sorts of great. Stanley Kubrick explores the world of sexual relations in the most unsettling and creepy way possible. Kidman’s role in this is an important one, but it’s not the best role of the movie. It’s just a great film and sadly Kubrick’s last. This is one of those movies that people need to go back and rewatch. The crazy thing is that despite it being a 1999 movie the scabs of awkwardness are easier to pick than you’d expect.
