(FOUR) TOP GUN
I’m not the biggest fan of Top Gun, but it’s worth noting. It’s a weird quasi-homoerotic tale of men flying fighter jets. Somehow people look past this and love it. They think of it as a super macho movie with a love story on the side. It’s more so a super love movie with some macho stuff on the side. It’s just a weird balance. I don’t think it would have worked without the talents of Tom Cruise.
(THREE) COLLATERAL
This is such an underrated movie. Tom Cruise plays an aging assassin who gets caught up in some madness. He’s the villain! He makes Jamie Foxx, a taxi driver, a drive him around and do his evil bidding with him. It’s a good action packed movie that sees Cruise play a character type that he rarely ever plays. When Tom Cruise gets crazy and intense I’m fairly certain clocks tick in reverse. It’s THAT bad ass.
(TWO) JERRY MAGUIRE
Jerry Maguire is one of those movies. You don’t want to admit to liking it, but in truth you love it. It’s a sports movie AND a romantic comedy so it’s easily one of the most manipulative kind of movies you can watch. You just know it’s going to tug at the heart. Tom Cruise does a great job at carrying this very well done movie. It got tons of love, made tons of money, and is always going to be one of those movies that pops up on your TV at some point.
(ONE) INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
This is by far my favorite Tom Cruise movies. He played the character of Lestat like a champion. You felt bad for him only to realize he’s both the biggest monster and most sympathetic character of the entire epic story. He worked awesomely with Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst. If you have any problems with Tom Cruise, this is a movie you should watch. Even if Anne Rice’s vampire world isn’t you cup of tea, Cruise’s performance was kick ass in this.
