Top 4 Anticipated Dramas Summer ‘13

(FOUR) 2 GUNS
This is based on a graphic novel, but it doesn’t feel like it. This is probably more of an action movie than a drama, but it’s hard to tell. It’s not the normal “bang! Pow!” type of action flick though. It’s listed as a “crime drama” so that’s what I’ll anticipate. Denzel Washington doesn’t make shitty popcorn movies anymore. Even if it’s an action movie you can bet your ass he’s going to deliver a full spectrum of emotion in his performance. In this movie he’s in the DEA and there is a whole investigation involving money, the mob, the CIA, and a lot of intense stuff. We also get Mark Wahlberg, Bill Paxton, and good amount of other familiar and talented faces. I don’t know if this movie will be the best movie of the year or anything, but it’s a movie I’ll definitely check out once it’s out of theatres.

(THREE) RUSH
Whoa. This movie is going to be a big one. The trailer is pretty cool. The action looks well shot and there is a distinct style to it. I found myself absorbed in what I’ve seen so far. Then again, it should be expected. Ron Howard has pretty good taste when it comes to his directorial decisions. This is also a bio pic, those are typically decent if the right people are attached. Chris Hemsworth is a decent actor and I think this could be his big break out as a serious actor. He’s joined by Olivia Wilde, which is never a bad thing. The story is based on a Formula One rivalry from the 70s. I don’t know anything about that, but it seems interesting. If I have to learn about it from Opie, so be it.

(TWO) THE WAY, WAY BACK
The guys who wrote The Descendants bring us their next movie. This time writers slash actors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash are also directing so it should be interesting. I’m sure it’ll be awesome because the cast is stacked. Outside of the young actors, we get Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet, Toni Collette, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry, and the amazingly underrated and under-seen Allison Janney. That’s a bad ass cast list. If the movie is as cerebral or deep as The Descendants then this movie can’t be kick ass. The interesting thing is that it’s slated to be a PG 13 movie and it’s focus is around a teenage relationship. It follows a teenager who makes a friend during his summer break. It’s obviously a “coming of age” story, but that’s never a bad thing. A good movie is a good movie. I’d be really shocked if this movie isn’t AT LEAST “good”. I’m willing to bet it reaches a higher level than that.

(ONE) BLUE JASMINE
It’s a Woody Allen movie. At this point if you like Woody Allen movies you LOVE Woody Allen movies. I’m pretty sure if you like one of his movies you’ve seen more than one and find value in all of his work. He’s just one of those Scorsese or Tarintino type of artistic filmmaker that transcends the idea of “casual fans”. He crafts a certain kind of movie. It’s not for everyone. This movie is listed to be about “the story of the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife.” That could mean anything and everything. The cast is made up of Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Carnivale, Louis C.K. Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard, and a few others. So I can’t imagine it not at least being interesting, but Woody’s last few movies have been some of his recent best so I’m pretty stoked for this one. I mean Louis C.K. in a Woody Allen movie? Deal!
