(FOUR) MC HAMMER
He told us “you can’t touch this” and now it’s true. MC Hammer’s career is a notorious one. He rose to fame, fell off a bit, lost his money, had a few comebacks, got his head on straight, and now shows up and does his thing for all the old school fans. He’s pretty much a “county fair” level act now. I hope my assessment is WAY off and he’s doing great, but I’ve not heard or seen anything new from him. In a world where skinny jeans are king, the puffy Hammer pants would be the much needed change.
(THREE) GAME SHOWS FOR KIDS
I miss the shows like Double Dare, Hidden Temple, Wild N’ Crazy Kids, and like a million other shows where kids would win crappy prizes, a little money, trips, and bikes. This isn’t around anymore. Kids don’t have time for physical challenges anymore, but they surely need them. These shows were fun.
(TWO) DUBBING THE RADIO TO TAPE
No one has to do this anymore. Back in the day before computers made it so easy to listen to any song we want whenever we want, we had to resolve to desperate measures. One of those was to put a blank cassette tape in and wait for your favorite songs. The trick was to listen to the DJ say what’s coming up and sit there with a trigger finger ready to hit “Record” the second you think the song you love MIGHT be starting. This was an underappreciated art. I like the fact that it’s easier now, but I think little extra efforts like this made me appreciate music more than people who didn’t have to do this.
(ONE) THE SURREAL LIFE
Before VH1 started with all the celeb reality stuff, it was fun. They weren’t being TOTALLY fake with their crappy reality shows. They weren’t JUST casting strippers and whores for “Rock of Love” and “Flavor of Love”, they were casting old celebrities or people who have “fallen off” a little bit. They’d take these random famous people and put them in a house for a season! It’s basically “Real World” for celebrities, but it was just a lot of fun. Sadly, most of the same bunch would go on be on Dr. Drew’s Rehab show or at least should consider it. This show didn’t get to go on NEARLY as long as I’d have hoped. I assume VH1 decided it was cheaper to pay low class unfamous people like “New York” to have a show than someone on the level of a Ron Jeremy. I’d LOVE for VH1 to bring this back. The closest thing we have is “The Apprentice” and who wants to watch anything involving Donald Trump?
