(FOUR) CONSTANT HYPOCRISY
The WWE does not practice what they preach. In the very simplest of examples, look at their anti-bullying campaign. They use the “but we’re a TV show!” excuse when people point out their heels are bullies, but they don’t roll credits at the end. If a 10 year old sees CM Punk at the mall, they’re not going to stop and think “it’s Phil Brooks! The dude who plays CM Punk!” It’s either all or none. You treat the fans like they’re marks when it’s convenient, but when it comes to pointing out their hypocrisy they expect everyone to be insiders. This is just ONE example of this nonsense. The WWE seems to always strive to make a point, only to break it for shock value down the road. I think these kind of glaring antics is why the media doesn’t respect them as a real brand of entertainment or sports.
(THREE) THE STEROID TRIAL
This was one of those cases where it had to be admitted that wrestling is a “work”. Vince McMahon and others were put on trial for steroids. Hogan went snitch and didn’t do what he should have to help Vince, the WWF, and wrestling in general. It’s almost never talked about, but I really think this trial and the things that went on around this time was really the end of the 80’s “Golden Age” of WWF.
(TWO) OWEN HART’S DEATH
This horrible accident should have been number one. You can blame Vince, the company responsible for the harness, or Owen himself but none of that is going to bring “The Rocket” back. Owen Hart, by all accounts I’ve ever heard, was a great man, wrestler, friend, and father. He died doing what he loves, but that doesn’t make it any better.
(ONE) THE BENOIT MURDERS
This one is obvious. Chris Benoit is a murderer who killed his son, his wife, and himself. I don’t give a shit how much you appreciated his WRESTLING matches or how much you think he should be in the hall of fame. Hilter was a painter, should we all just forget about what he did and hang up Hitler originals in our home? Screw that! This is the biggest black eye in wrestling history. The “sport” that Benoit “loved” and “lived for” will forever have a black eye because of what he did. He didn’t die doing what he loved, he died destroying its reputation. No one forced him to wrestle a specific style, take roids, take pills, and keep taking shots to the head. That’s ALL on him. You can’t blame anyone else. If you do, you’re as stupid as dirt and as valuable too.
