(FOUR) JACK RYAN: SHADOW ONE
Jack Ryan is back! How do we know this? Because the movie is called “JACK RYAN: SHADOW ONE”! How lame and cheesy is that? It sounds like a fake movie you’d hear Bart Simpson not want to go to. It sounds like a parody movie. I like that! It sounds so over the top and hokey that it’s going to have to be good. The Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Afflecks of the past are now joined by Chris Pine. Pine is pretty awesome as Kirk so this seems right up his alley. He could make a career out of taking silly premises and making them credible and watchable. The rest of the cast includes Kenneth Branagh, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, and David Paymer. It should be hilariously action packed!
(THREE) LONE SURVIVOR
On the surface I want to be jaded and say this movie is going to be hokey. I’m sure it’s be good, but it’d be one of those inspiring action packed war movies that glorify war by displaying the soul-crushing survival parts of it. Then at the end, the flag will wave and manly eyes will have tears begin to swell. But I’m going to be more open minded. This is written and directed by Peter Berg and he’s not one to just toss out some trite shit. He casted some awesome people like Ben Foster, Eric Bana, and Emile Hirsch on top of stars like Taylor Kitsch and Mark Wahlberg. It’s based on a true story, but it looks to have some emotive elements that “Zero Dark Thirty” didn’t really have. I’m not sure how exciting I am to watch this, but I know I want to. For a movie like this, I feel like I would need to be prepared for a rollercoaster of action. Sometimes you just know a movie is going to be exhausting, but art that challenges you is the best art so I’m in.
(TWO) NEED FOR SPEED
Aaron Paul is getting a shot to run with the ball in a movie that seems perfect for him. He’s been great on “Breaking Bad”, but I like to think he has plenty of potential to do more. This movie won’t get him any crazy awards, but people will watch it and hopefully like it. He’s playing a video game character-based movie. He’s just out of jail and signs up for a cross-country race where people are trying to kill him. The cast is cool. Michael Keaton is on board which gives it a lot more credibility off the bad, but then the rest of the cast is pretty interesting. Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Kid Cudi, Rami Malek, and others all round out the actors. This could be a fun movie. It already sounds cooler than Fast and Furious, but could also become a franchise like that. I’m interested to see how this is received.
(ONE) ROBOCOP
I was a casual fan of RoboCop back in the day, but never got too into him. I was weary about them making a remake, but once I realized it wasn’t being done by Michael Bay I was completely okay with it. The casting of Joel Kinnaman as Alex aka RoboCop gets me excited. I’m a fan of the dude’s work on “The Killing” and really dig they’re going with someone who is not a big household name. Kinnaman is a solid actor and could prove to be great for this movie and potential franchise relaunch. He’s going to only get more famous so growing with the franchise would rock. This movie has one of the best casts I’ve seen on paper in a really long time. When you put names like Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, and Aimee Garcia on list it’s hard not to take notice. The trailer looks cool. The action and style has a grit to it and I imagine the movie will be pretty edgy and fun. Good mindless action movies are hard to find these days. This could be THAT movie.
