BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER
(FOUR) TERRY CREWS
He’s known mainly as being the dad on “Everybody Hates Chris” and as the president in “Idocracy”. He’s also been in “Get Smart”, “White Chicks”, “Friday After Next” “Street Kings” and soon “The Expendable” with about another dozen guys that could fit this list. He was also drafted by the LA Rams in the eleventh round of the 1991 NFL Draft. He would be a journeyman for the most part playing for the Rams, Chargers, Redskins, and Eagles. The dude is a monster. He’s a tall and physically intimidating dude. At 41, I wouldn’t suggest it now, but he could have very easily had a career in professional wrestling. I say this because besides being big, he has personality and acting range. He doesn’t take himself too serious and has a sense of humor about himself. I could of seen him working as a heel or a face and if he played any character like he did in “Idocracy” as “U.S. President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho” he’d of deserved the belt.
(THREE) WILL SMITH
I once heard someone describe Will Smith as “some people are born with no talent and are useless because people like Will Smith are born with the talent of six people.” He has had tons of success with music, tons of success with television, with movies, with producing, and with pretty much anything he has attempted. He’s always in good shape, is a proven performer on multiple platforms, and has the charisma unmatched by 99.999% of the human race. Why should I have ANY doubts that Will Smith would have excelled in professional wrestling if that was his chosen career?
(TWO) WILL FERRELL
He’s never been known for his form but for definitely acclaimed for this physical comedy. While there is much more to professional wrestling, it’s not THAT far from the same world of “physical comedy”. You have to mainly focus on protecting yourself and the timing. You do both right, get a crowd response, get good ratings/box office and you’re considered a success. Yes, Will Ferrell would never of had a chiseled body or anything but did/does Ric Flair, JBL, or a lot of old timers? Nope. They were just solid and big. Will is a bigger guy and could pull it off. He has the personality and improv skills to easily get a crowd to do whatever he wanted and could of rocked as a goofier Ric Flair type as he was in “Eastbound and Down”. He wouldn’t even have to be any good, he’d just have to work the crowd enough for them to care about him and he could have been at the top of the business for a decade. Imagine an Attitude Era “Stone Cold” Steve Austin giving a “stunner” to a villainous Will Ferrell and tell me a crowd wouldn’t explode over it.
(ONE) JASON STATHAM
This man is the main reason this is being written. I’ve been saying Jason Statham would have been a great professional wrestler now for a few years. I’ve seen him in the Guy Ritchie movies like “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels”, “Snatch”, and “Revolver”. And of course he’s also known for “The Transporter”, but what won me over was his bad ass work in “Crank”. There is a small form of doubt when it comes to the other picks on this list because it’s been long proven that just because someone is charismatic or “has the look” they don’t automatically become good wrestlers, that along a great one. But Statham is a natural athlete and does his own stunts and fight scenes. He’s willing to take a bump for the show and with that his martial arts, diving, football, and other athletic backgrounds he would have a great shot at it. Jason Statham could have been the English “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. He could be doing exactly what Wade Barrett is doing now, but with so much more intensity. He is a man’s man, big, in shape, a martial artist, charismatic, and would have been an awesome character in wrestling.
