(FOUR) BACK TO BEING ABOUT WEED
The 6th season starts soon and there’s a few things we know from the promos they’ve been putting out there and based on how last season ended. Hell, I’m fairly certain the first episode was “leaked” online already but we’re not about cheating here at the Daily Fournication! The family is on the run, Doug is left behind, Elizabeth Perkins is gone so no more Celia, and it doesn’t look all that exciting. I want to be excited, but the last two seasons were less than thrilling and the enjoyment of the show has dwindled. Still, it’s not bad when you don’t hold the early seasons as the standard, it’s better than a lot of other stuff out there, and I’ve just grown familiar with the characters. I’d like to see it pan out and still for the most part care what happens. Well, as much as you can for a television show. I think one aspect of the show that I miss is the fact that the show went far far away from being about weed. The show is called “Weeds” and they bastardize the pot leaf image to portray themselves as “edgy” when the show is more about cocaine, heroin, Mexican mafia and politics, and being a horrible mother. I know they did the Pot Shop think with Silas and Doug, but it was at best a C-Level subplot. The actors, characters, and the weed deserve way more respect than that.
(THREE) MORE DOUG
This former dark comedy has lost a lot of the comedy and just became dark, depressing, and overly serious. I’m all for the characters developing, but the charm isn’t as there as it was. Nancy has become very unlikeable and a pretty depressing human being. She started out doing what she had to do to survive and make ends meet, when things were lighter, fun, and about weed. Then as the story progresses she continues to make selfish decisions and actions despite her families safety or anyone else’s. But even in like Season 4 when they were first leaving their little rich people community it the dark was getting stronger, but the comedy was still present. A lot of that is to do with Doug, Andy, and Dean. With Elizabeth Perkins leaving, possibly getting off a sinking ship, I doubt Dean or Isabelle will be around much if at all. I’m cool with Andy developing and progressing. He’s still with charm, hilarious, and all that but it’s good to see him in the process of possibly settling down. This leaves Doug. Doug needs to be featured more and stronger. I saw in the promo that Doug is left in Mexico and is held captive as they try to find the Botwins. This COULD be funny, but hopefully not in a sloppy way. The cool think about Kevin Nealon’s Doug in the early years that he was goofy, outrageous, and a living cartoon character but he was also ambitious, had some balls, and could manipulate as well as anyone on the show. It’s like Kevin Nealon is being paid to pop his head in once in awhile, quote “Beavis and Butthead” and go back to craft service. Give us MORE Doug and give him back his balls.
(TWO) CONRAD AND FAMILY RETURN
If they’re traveling, why can’t they cross paths with Conrad, Heylia, and Vanetta. Conrad was an important part of the show in the first three seasons. Heylia was always a strong character with and interesting and unique input on the story. Vanetta was kind just there for the ride, but was fun and had some life in the character. But I know people especially want Conrad back. He stuck his neck out for Nancy and seemed to be one of the few people who really cared about her. Mary Louise Parker and Romany Malco’s chemistry is great in the first three seasons. There was no proper write off or goodbye. It was like “Oh shit, the town is burning” and these people were gone from the story. Give the fans some closure because I doubt we’ll get it with Celia now being gone. It’s down to Andy and Doug. If one of them leaves, I’m done with this show. Speaking of being done…
(ONE) SET UP THE NEXT SEASON = THE LAST SEASON
This is a joint that should have been put out by now. It’s starting to taste like resin and it’s burning your fingers. It’s been announced that this season is NOT the last season. To be honest, that’s kind of sad. I’ve loved this show more than I’ve been upset with it. When I’m upset it’s because I want to love it as I used to. As I’ve learned with “Sopranos”, “The Wire”, and “Six Feet Under” you should stick to about five or six seasons. Even then they push it for a little too long, but end at just about a perfect time. It ends strong and most importantly gives the viewer some closure before the viewer loses interest in the show. Season 6 would have been a perfect out for this show, but not chance now. We’re getting at least a seventh season. END IT. Let the show go out with some dignity. There’s always the fun talk about how to end it. One interesting suggestions is that every sin, every selfish deed, and every one she screwed over finally catches up to her and she’s killed. The last scene would be her being put in the ground as “Little Boxes” played once again. Others include her and Andy finally hooking up, her finally becoming a stoner, and her moving back to Agrestic , quitting the drug game and doing something cutesy like writing a book. Or maybe she was writing a book the entire time? Ooooh trippy man. (Just let it end.)
