"Top 4 Anticipated Comedies (FALL 2010)"
8/20/10
BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

(FOUR) THE VIRGINITY HIT
(September 10th – Starring: Matt Bennet, Zack Pearlman, Krysta Rodriquez – Director: Huck Botko & Andre Gurland)
This is here by default. I can’t in good faith put up the new Ben Stiller “Fockers” movie. The Joaquin Phoenix mockumentary MIGHT be a comedy, but is too weird to be sure of. There are some others, but I’m just not sure about them. The comedy scene for the fall is pretty barren. I’m hoping there’s some smaller comedies or some I’m just not seeing that’ll come out of nowhere and rock our worlds. Hell, THIS might be it, but I’m doubtful. It looks like the makers of this movie saw the web cam scene from “American Pie” and decided to make a whole movie in the same style. It looks like douche bag kids who really liked the movies “Superbad” and “American Pie” made a movie. The scenarios, characters, and just the whole thing comes off as something I’d never want to see. Then I have to keep in mind that WILL FERRELL and DANNY MCKAY produced this. I have to trust them on some level. I mean after the spree of awesome comedy classics they’ve provided us over the years we kind of have to. They’ve done some producing before. Most notability they were producers on the low budget, unheard of “Fist Foot Way”. That gave us Jody Hill and Danny McBride in all their awesome glory. I’m not crazy about how this one looks, but I will give it an open mind and see what happens. If Will and Adam like it then it can’t be THAT bad can it?

(THREE) EASY A
(September 17th – Starring: Emma Stone – Director: Will Gluck)
I was disappointed to find out that this is a PG 13 high school comedy. If it were R Rated, I’d think I’d be a bit more excited. I’m not one for an overly vulgar or bad R comedy like a random “National Lampoons” flick. I just like more edge and grit to my comedy. But it’s hard to not want to at least give this a chance. Emma Stone is awesome and is worthy of the support. She was great in supporting roles for “Superbad”, “Zombieland”, “House Bunny”, and “The Rocker”. This is her first real shot at a starring role so I’m hoping for big success for this movie. The plot is a modern teenage twist on The Starlet Letter, which is good source material at least. If this movie has any chance, it fully rests on Emma Stone’s carrying power. I like her odds.

(TWO) MEGAMIND
(November 5th – Starring: Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, David Cross – Director: Tom McGrath)
Chill out, this is only an animated movie. We’re not REALLY getting a real life movie with that insanely awesome cast. But we are getting potentially one of the best animated movies in a while. Dreamworks has been putting out some quality toonage over the years. Add their style and talents to these voices and a good story and they have their new Shrek series. But the question is if the story IS any good. It’s about a super villain named “Megamind” voiced by Will Ferrell. He KILLS, yes KILLS his nemesis “Metro Man”, who is voiced by Brad Pitt. So with that “Megamind” is bored and creates his a new enemy named “Titan”(voiced by Jonah Hill) to pass the time. “Titan” goes evil and does a better job at it than “Megamind”. This forces “Megamind” to have to step up and save the world. I don’t know about you, but that just sounds awesome. I had a somewhat similar idea for years, but between this movie and Hancock the job is done for me. I’m not an animated movie guy by ANY means, but I honestly DO want to see this. Thanks a lot, Will Ferrell.

(ONE) DUE DATE
(November 5th – Starring: Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis – Director: Todd Phillips)
I can’t think of any other comedy coming out in the near future that has me more excited than this. Hell, I’m anticipating this movie more than even any of the 2010 summer movies. Todd Phillips made this little comedy called “The Hangover” that I hear did pretty well for an R-Rated comedy and of course he’s behind the great “Old School”. His track record is rocktastic. Then there’s the actual cast of the movie. Robert Downey Jr. has taken his throne as one of the kings of film lately. In his youth he made some awesome movies like “Less Than Zero” and “Chaplin”, then he fell off and into his demons, but then he came back swinging as is now one of the top actors in the world. He literally CAN do it all. He can do drama, he can do thriller, he can do action, and we can best believe he can do comedy. But he’s just the straight man in the story. His counterpart in this is the new comedy genius that is Zach Galifianakis. Zach has come into his own and is getting tons of attention for his awesomeness. We put these two oil and water personas in a road trip. The story for this is that Downey Jr. has to make it home in time for his child’s birth and the only way to make it is to hitch a ride from Zach, playing an aspiring actor. IMDB also lists Juliette Lewis, Danny McBride, Jamie Foxx, Alan Arkin, RZA, Matt Walsh, and others as supporting cast. Those people on their own could make a great movie. I know road trip comedies are hit or miss and I AM looking at you “Eurotrip”, but how can this not be awesome?
