(FOUR) SILLYWORLD
(“Come What(ever) May” – 2007)Most would consider this to be the best track of Stone Sour when it comes to the music side of things and it’s hard to argue that. The song overall is pretty amazing. It reminds me of an old throw back, but with a metal edge. Some definite Pink Floyd influence here in the verse. I remember hearing it for the first time and I had no clue it was Stone Sour until the chorus.
(THREE) GET INSIDE
(“Stone Sour” – 2002)This is the track that got my attention and it just so happened to be the band’s first single. It’s a more hard rock/metal track. Corey utilizes some of that Slipknot growl, but the music is more of a traditional hard rock song. A good one… a bad ass one. When it came out, it was exactly what my ears were craving. It’s still a damn good song today.
(TWO) THROUGH GLASS
(“Come What(ever) May” – 2006)This song is pretty awesome. It showcases Corey’s vocals and lyrical talent. I love the metal side of Stone Sour, but I’m a huge fan of getting to hear Corey Taylor’s vocals in something other than the primal growls of Slipknot. I know it’s easy to go with “Bothered” to get that result, but sometimes that song is just dramatic and depressing. This song has the same amount of emotion, but it still has a rocking melody behind it.
(ONE) BOTHER
(“Stone Sour” – 2002)Radiohead has “Creep”, Nine Inch Nails has “Closer”, Tool has “Sober”… and Stone Sour has “Bother”. This song was played on the radio so much that I got kind of burnt out on it. The reason the radio did play it so much is because people wanted to hear it and because it’s one of the best rock songs to be released this millennium. The emotion coming from Corey Taylor is amazing. If you listen, if you really listen, you’ll have a damn hard time not relating to the words. Musically, it’s perfectly understated. They could of gone full out with the music side of things and turned this into a Staind or Nickelback song, but they kept it simple and let the melody and Corey’s emotion carry it. And holy shit, it does. I’m sure Stone Sour will make more great singles and put out more awesome albums, but this song will always be the definitive track that most people will associate with Stone Sour.
