(FOUR) BOOKIE
John Stewart has put out three books. The first one was from 1998 called “Naked Pictures of Famous People”. It was blatant false advertisement as it was just a collection of short stories and rants. It made the New York Times Best Seller List though, so good on him. In 2004 he and his Daily Show posse unleashed “America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction”. It was a mock high school text book that kind of parodied some of the different aspects of the US government and history. It was another best selling. Then we have the new one and I guess a sequel called “Earth (The Book): A Vistor’s Guide to the Human Race”. Along with his own books he’s done vocal work on audiobooks including a Colbert book as he voiced President Garfield on “Sarah Vowell’s Assassination Vacation”. He likes books.
(THREE) ONCE A HOST, ALWAYS A HOST
His first hosting gig was for Comedy Central, but it wasn’t for The Daily Show. It was actually for a short lived show called “Short Attention Span Theater”. It did get him a hosting gig on MTV as host of “The John Stewart Show”. I can’t imagine who else MTV would have gotten to host “The John Stewart Show” though. From there was “You Wrote It, You Watch It” and Stewart guest hosting on The Late Late Show. Many thought he’d take it over, but they wanted to give him an even later slot so he turned it down. In 99 he took over The Daily Show and the rest is history. On top of this he’s done the Grammys and Oscars.
(TWO) ACTOR-ISH
It’s pretty obvious with that back story and one key role he played on HBO, John Stewart hearts talk shows and especially hosting them. He also fictitiously stole The Larry Sanders show within the long building storyline of the show. He played a version of himself, but the situation at hand kind of made you dislike him. How could he do that to Larry? That’s the kind of surreal-realness the show had. Any who, Stewart has been on a few of my favorite movies and shows. He was on The Larry Sander Show, Spin City, The Simpsons, and about a million other TV shows as “himself”. But movie wise, he was in Half Baked, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Big Daddy, and the seriously underappreciated “The Faculty”. He’s funny and likeable enough where it’s easy to assume that he’d of had a successful sitcom/comedy movie career if he hadn’t of been so into sitting down at work.
(ONE) AWARDS GALORE
John Stewart has had more honors and awards bestowed on him than most entertainers. He’s received Peabody Awards for his coverage on the 2000 and 2004 elections. He was Entertainment Weekly’s “Entertainer of the Year” in 2004. He’s been given an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from William and Mary. There is like a million more awards and I’m only slightly exaggerating. They even named an asteroid after him. For real-zies!
