(FOUR) 3 LIBRAS
(2001) It was hard enough to narrow it down to a top 3, but this fourth spot was a bitch. There are a few stand out A Perfect Circle tracks that stands out WAY more than others, but then the rest is great and works for different moods and times. So basically, my number 4 is the track I’m “feeling the most” right now. 3 Libras was underrated when it came out. Everyone was all over the big single and sleeping on the rest of the album. I could have gone with just about any track from Mer de Noms. It’s one of the best albums to come out in the past ten years and this is one of the best songs. It’s understated and great.
(THREE) THE OUTSIDER
(2005) The top three here could easily be interchangeable, but I’m trying to keep some order. This could be their most popular and profitable song. It’s been used in tons of promotional videos. I’ve seen it on TV and in movies. Most notably the video being featured in an episode of the HBO series Six Feet Under and in about a million trailers for Resident Evil movies. There’s just something poetic about this song. It’s a symphonic war that’s delivered in a beautiful piece.
(TWO) PASSIVE
(2005) Not many people know this, but Trent Reznor is partially responsible for this song. Trent, Maynard, and a few other fine folks were in a super group that went nowhere called Tapeworm. This song is a reworking of one of those songs called “Vacant”. That’s just a cool fact about a great song. The song was used in the Constantine movie and was a pretty big single. They’d end up putting it on the emotive album that was mostly covers. It’s a powerful song with lyrics that just about anyone can relate to in some fashion or another.
(ONE) JUDITH
(2000) It’s not that the last two songs are any better, but this song has the benefit of being the first single. The song came out and the band instantly showed off their guns. People were weary of Maynard taking time away from Tool, but this song pretty much gave him that needed pass to do it. It’s a great rock song and one of the very best rock songs to come out during the decade. If you hear this song and don’t get something out of it every time then you’re a liar.
