BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER
(FOUR) DOC HOLLYWOOD
In1991, Fox starred in a romantic comedy with Julie Warner, Woody Harrelson, and Bridget Fonda. That’s a pretty fun cast as it is, but the entire bunch was on their A-game in this movie. Julie Warner, who is most know to… well, me… as Tommy’s love interest in “Tommy Boy” is at her appealing, Fox is at his most charming, and Woody is just douchey enough to be the bad guy. And yeah, it’s Indiana so we kind of have to sneak this one in…
(THREE) LIGHT OF DAY
Speaking of Indiana. This movie was also show in Indiana and around the Midwest. This 1987 drama was good stuff. Fox stars with Gena Rowlands and Joan Jett. Fox and Jett are in a rock band and are brother and sister. She gets carried away and starts becoming a bad mom as he stays the good guy. Fox is the star of this movie, but it’s Joan Jett who shines and steals this movie. This is another one of those movies that you don’t hear anyone mention anymore. Another cool fact is that Trent Reznor is in this movie as part of a background band.
(TWO) LIFE WITH MIKEY
At this point, it’s 1993 and Michael J. Fox is a star. This comedy was a great kids movie. Being 10 at the time of its release it was right up my alley. The movie is about a former child star and current talent agent “Mikey”. He comes across a pick-pocket hustler girl named “Angie Vega”. She hits it big and hilarity and heartwarming ensues. I’m pretty fond of this movie. It was silly enough for a kid, smart enough for an adult, and well done enough to be timeless. Yet, it isn’t. How often do we see this played in the afternoon on basic cable? Never or close to it.
(ONE) THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS
Between Back to the Future and Teen Wolf, Michael J. Fox released a much underrated movie. In this movie he just graduated college and moves to New York. The company he was hired to come out for was sold before he shows up so he’s left without a job. He gets a job at his uncle’s company in the mail room. He then sneaks into an executive role and discovers the companies problems and brings them down. It’s just a good movie about the little guy bringing the machine down. The charm and chops of Fox are clear as day in this movie and he was just hitting his stride. Why this movie isn’t heralded more and shown more is way beyond me.
