(FOUR) BLOW UP THE OUTSIDE
This one won me over. I enjoyed Soundgarden up until this point and was fascinated with them, but after seeing this video I officially entered my obsessed phase. The video is great, the song is perfect, and I have nothing else really to say about this one. It’s just one of the best rock songs from the past twenty or so years. Music isn’t like this anymore and it’s a shame.
(THREE) JESUS CHRIST POSE
It’s almost TWENTY YEARS OLD now, but it’s still as awesome as ever. The weird guitar work at the beginning, the drums, the insane visuals of the video, the MTV ban, and the fact that it’s just a great song is why this one is an easy pick. The video is experimental as they come. The song is pretty unconventional and abrasive. Somehow magic is captured here and it works.
(TWO) BLACK HOLE SUN
Black Hole Sun is a weird song. It’s a great tune for sure, but it borders on creepy and calming in a very unsettling way. The video always creeped me out. The weird looking suburban people getting sucked in to the”hole” and the band just casually playing in a field is good stuff. Howard Greenhalgh did a pretty awesome job directing this madness. It complimented the song very well.
(ONE) SPOONMAN
This is probably debatable in most circles. To me, Soundgarden can’t be summed up into a top four list. They had some great albums and a few really big hits among some moderate ones. The really big ones are classics. So in reality, the top spots could be these four songs or about a half dozen other just as great tunes. But c’mon… it’s Spoonman. Spoonman is my favorite of all their tracks. I have my own personal reasons, I used it as my entrance song in wrestling, but it’s a kick ass song. How many songs out there have spoon solos? Exactly… nine. But this one is the coolest.
