I read awhile back that Russell Brand was taking on the Dudley Moore role of “Arthur” in a remake. I was curious enough. I like Brand and he’s dependable for laughs. I’m almost positive his act will get old unless he busts out some range, but right now I’m still not tired of him and will embrace it while I can. Then I find out Helen Mirren is cast… and then Jennifer Garner in a crazy role? I’m in. The trailer is charming, but nothing special. Being a Bowie and Queen fan I enjoyed the use of “Under Pressure”. It’s always a good song, but lyrically it doesn’t seem like “Arthur” has any such pressure. Maybe that was an attempt at irony? Luis Guzman looks hilarious in a “side kick” kind of way. Then I see Greta Gerwig. I’m a big fan of hers as well. After seeing her in “Greenberg”, I feel for her. The movie looks almost exactly like the original, which irks me a little. The original was okay, but was far from Dudley Moore’s best movie and kind of forgettable. I fear no matter how charming and cute this movie will be it’ll fall to the same forgettable side in favor of more “in your face” type of R-rated stuff that’s coming out this spring. I’m still going to see this as soon as possible, but with reasonable expectations.
