Does Johnny Depp choose his roles based on how much rum he can pretend to drink on camera? If so I now understand the seventeen pirate movies and now this one. It’s easy to want this to be a sequel to “Fear and Loathing”, but it’s not. Hunter S. Thompson did write this. It’s his first novel. It’s a story about a journalist who goes to Puerto Rico to get away from the noise of the big city. It looks like one of those “let’s follow this character on one of his crazy journey” type of movies. I know that’s pretty broad, but I mean it like a Big Lebowski or something of an odyssey. The cast here seems solid. Richard Jenkins is always awesome, Aaron Eckhart is cool, and I can’t think of any bad performances from Giovanni Ribisi or Michael Rispoli that I’ve seen. This movie looks sharp, witty, profane, profound, literate, and fun. I’ve grown tired of Depp doing all the Tim Burton stuff so this is a huge welcomed change. I want to see this, possibly more than any other upcoming movie.
