"THE GREAT DEBATERS"
1/16/08
BY MIKEY MIGO
I had the pleasure of seeing this movie the other night. I was reluctant to devote over two hours to a movie as I've been really busy lately. Yet, I watched this movie and regretted not seeing it the second it was released. Sure, it was a bit cliché and predictable as hell, but it was a good movie with great performances. Denzel Washington can read the phone book out loud to a camera and get a Oscar nod, he's that good. Still you watch this and know he really cares about the material and isn't phoning it in. He puts a great starring role out there that isn't a main focus role. To me the main role was taken by Nate Parker playing Henry Rowe. He pretty much took the lead Denzel Washington gave and took it as far as he personally could. His performance should be getting him Best Supporting Actor nods. If he doesn't walk out of award season with at least one award on his mantle then it's a crime against acting. Forest Whitaker did a fine supporting role as well and it was nice to see him use some of the natural chemistry he has with Denzel Washington on the screen. I keep saying "Denzel Washington" because there was an awesome young actor in there named "Denzel Whitaker", ironically. To me, he did a great job, but still the supporting actor role belonged to Nate Parker. I just hope that my own movies become viable enough to major production companies that I get the opportunity to work with him before he completely takes over Hollywood. See this NOW if you can, if not buy it the second it's released on DVD. Easily the second best movie I've seen in 2008(Wristcutters: A Love Story is still my fav).
