BY MIKEY MIGO
I was weary to watch this movie. I am huge movie nerd and have started my own tradition of seeing all of the big award nominated movies. Still, I've always had a problem with subtitled movies. Call it lazy or call it whatever, but I like to take it the entire scene and let it absorb me. Having to squint and read words on the bottom of the screen takes away from that for me. There have been exceptions over the years like "The Orphanage" or "Run Lola Run", but that was the main rare occasions. That is until now. The script is great. I loved the layering upon layering of back story. There have been movies who have tried to do something like this, but it sometimes turns into a huge mess. In this case, Danny Boyle hit it out of the park. We bounce from "present day" to "childhood" seamlessly and really there's nothing that's NOT interesting about this movie. The story, the direction, the acting, the editing, and pretty much the whole project are just about flawless. It's one of those projects that everyone involved with just kinda snapped into their "A-Game". The result is one of, if not THE best film of 2008. There's been much much hype and media masturbation over "Slumdog" and I can see why. I didn't see this until last week, but of the movies that everyone is all ga-ga over from 2008 I can easily see why. The Dark Knight, The Wrestler, and now this movie are my three picks of 2008 that actually lived up to the hype. If you're a fan of the little guy succeeding, struggles being overcame at all costs, love, art, or just a good film then this movie is something that you must see. If I didn't lose you by now and you're reading these words, you should see it now!
