I caught what seems to be a Straight to DVD RomCom the middle of last week called "Moving McAllister". The stars of the movie that I knew were Mila Kunis, Jon Heder, and Rutger Hauer. The lead was Ben Gourley who also wrote the movie and produced it. This can usually mean one of two things, no one else would step in to take the lead role or it was "too personal" for anyone else to tackle. From what I see with it, Ben just wanted to do it himself or was talked into doing it by the friends he worked on it with. I liked the movie. I won't blow smoke up anyone's asses and say it was a great movie, but it was enjoyable. The storyline has been done to death with it basically being "uptight guy meets eccentric girl and is forced to travel with her". So yeah, it's a "coming of age, love story that involves a road trip and wacky supporting characters". Jon Heder plays a weird hitchhiker and I liked his work here more than any other movie I've seen him in. Mila Kunis pays the eccentric fun girl very well and is a HUGE step forward from the likes of "American Psycho 2" movies she's done. I think she has TONS of potential and I don't see why she's not getting more roles. Hauer plays the uncle of Kunis's character and the successful boss of Gourley to a tee. But still, the main man of this movie was Ben Gourley. He wrote the movie, was a producer, and starred in it so the weight of the film was definitely on his back. You're probably not going to find a lot of critics who go ga-ga over this movie. It's not the typical edgy indie art flick and it's not a mainstream blockbuster. It doesn't have the slap-stick humor of most comedies and it's not so much a star driven vehicle like most "independent" movies. Still, the movie obviously has a lot of heart and the real critic would be the normal movie fans out there who just want to sit back, relax, laugh, and just have a good time. I don't really know why I rambled about this movie more than pretty much any other movie I've talked about before. I sorta think it's because it clicked with me very well. Not just the content, but the direction, style, and overall point of it all. I can only hope I find the same for my next movie. Hopefully my path and Ben Gourley's path cross in the future. I think we're on the same page.
