I thought I saw this movie when it first came out in 1993. That would make me around 10 years old so I could be wrong. I think I'd of had nightmares if I had seen it. About two weeks ago I watched this movie and was blown away. The movie centers on a writer/photographer couple played smoothly by David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes. He has a novel that's due about serial killers and she wants to get away. So to compromise they decide to go on a road trip to California. Along the way they'd stop at sites where serial killers did their worst and document it. The two art house yuppies for some reason can't really afford the trip so they put a posting up at a college. Meanwhile, a redneck couple played by a vile Brad Pitt and "slow" Juliette Lewis fall on hard times. Their paths cross after the posting and they join the journey. The characterizations of everyone make it really uncomfortable, intense as hell, and a whole lot of twisted. Lewis's work here is also up there with the best I've seen from her. I've only seen Forbes in "True Blood", but here she plays the snooty wife perfectly. Duchovny, who seems to ALWAYS play a writer, does a great job as well. I am a huge fan of his and with roles like this I'm amazed he never broke out to be a huge movie star. As the redneck psycho "Early Grayce", Brad Pitt owns this movie. This is EASILY one of Pitt's best roles. It's certainly better than "Benjamin Buttons" or really ANY of his post 90's roles. Back then he took on edgy roles and this one is right up there with Tyler Durden. If you've not seen this movie, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's a five star movie that somehow fell under my radar over the years. See it! See it now!
