"HOW TO BE A SERIAL KILLER"
2/24/10
BY MIKEY MIGO
I caught this movie this past week and was amazed by its awesomeness. I'm often forced to watch "Criminal Minds", but end up enjoying it partially because of Matthew Gray Gubler's "Reid" character. So finding out he was in this made it more accessible for me. It's gotten love at horror festivals, but to me it's a low budget dark comedy. The plot is that a master serial killer played by Dameon Clarke finds an often-shit-on shy loser in Matthew Gray Grubler and trains him in the deadly craft. There is some murder, obviously, and a little blood and gore, again obviously, but it's not really a horror movie. Instead, it's a really fun and entertaining dark comedy. A similar movie came out a few years ago called "Behind the Mask" in which a camera crew followed a killer around, but that was a bit hokier and truer to Freddie, Jason, and Michael Myers horror roots. This is more a surreal reality where it's almost feasible to occur. "How to Be" has more of a "Serial Mom"-John Waters kind of vibe that gives the characters and experience charm throughout the story. Clarke plays cocky crazy to a perfect tone. Not too over the top and not too snarky. The Gube, as I see many people call him, rocks as the shy-know nothing sheep that follows him along for the ride. Well done low budget productions that are done very well like this are inspiring. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark comedy, well done low budget, and hell, everyone. See it! See it Now!
