I know this isn't a movie, but it's probably the best I can do this week. Over the past week or two I've watched a lot of stuff that I've already reviewed, so this televised Broadway production will have to do. I am a Will Ferrell fan, always have been. As a kid I actually wrote the guy a letter when he was at SNL and while he didn't write me a letter back he sent me a very nice and somewhat cheesy signed photo that reads "To Mike- Best Wishes! Will Ferrell". I collected tons of autographs like that over the years, but I can honestly say that the Ferrell one is not even two feet from my head right now as I type this, framed and covered in a respectable layer of dust. That being said, I really don't consider myself bias. If Will makes a movie that doesn't tickle my fancy I'll admit it and if I love something I will share it with everyone. One thing I enjoyed about his SNL stint was his reoccurring characters. I enjoy the current SNL cast A LOT, but the one thing they're missing is the bankable reoccurring characters that the past seasons had. I really don't think there's any character that I'd watch a movie dedicated to. Will Ferrell's George W. was sorta like that. I enjoyed the hell out of it on SNL, but for 90 minutes? That would be the test. It turned out to be one of the best one man shows I've ever seen. Unlike the W movie, this production actually seemed more honest about the character. Oliver Stone painted a sympathetic wannabe good ol boy with daddy issues. Ferrell pulled NO punches. We get a real portrayal of W, but with a fictitious and comedic twist. With the use of facts, real things he said, and real things he did, Ferrell puts his own stank on things. I won't get into specifics because I think anyone and everyone should watch it. It's a lot to take in at once. They don't waste much time with jumping from topic to topic and Ferrell is very quick witted with the minor interactions with the crowd. If you've ever laughed at a Will Ferrell Bush impression then you WANT to see this. It's like a recap of the past eight years of American history and even more of Bush's history. What this show is in fact is a goodbye to one of the best and most famous presidential impressions of all time. Will Ferrell is on his A+ Game here. Yeah, not his A Game, but his A+ Game. Fans and comedy nerds are going to watch this production for years to come in the same vein as Eddie's "Raw" because it IS that good. My regret is not being wealthy and able to of made it out to New York to see it live for myself. I have faith in Will's acting and performing, but "Lost In Space" doesn't call to me like an "Anchorman", "Stranger Than Fiction", or even "Roxbury". Thankfully, this will hold me over until his next project that'll tickle my fancy. On a side note, what the hell is a fancy?
