I went into this one with an open mind. I didn't have really high expectations and expected in the least to be amused. Carell is pretty consistent in delivering the funny and someone very easy to root for. For me Fey is hit or miss, but her chemistry with Carell was pretty good. The problem is that they didn't feel like a couple, but rather just really close friends. I know that was part of the dilemma of their relationship, but there was no romantic tension between the two at all. That withstanding, I enjoyed these two together a lot. The chemistry and fun of it all reminded me of Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. I'm also a sucker for movies that are self-contained to a series of crazy events over one day/night. This movie had a lot of crazy scenarios, but it worked. The tone wasn't supposed to be super serious and it felt like a solid throwback to the 80's comedies. It wasn't hard R vulgar like a "Hangover", but it wasn't cheesy and lame like most PG 13ers are. It was just enjoyable, funny, and very easy to watch. The supporting cast and cameos only added to the fun. Mark Wahlberg, Ray Liotta, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Common, and so many others all had small but fun roles in the movie. My favorite cameo was J.B. Smoove playing the panicked cab driver. I won't get into each of their roles because it'd spoil the story. The trailer doesn't do this movie justice. It's a fun viewing and I recommend it. It won't change the world, but it can definitely change one's mood for the better. Solid B for sure.
